A media server is a program, such as iTunes or Windows Media Center that enables you to “broadcast” your videos to other computers and media extenders like Apple TV, Xbox 360, etc. Say you have a movie on DVD, you can try to rip DVD off disc for Media Server for enjoyment everywhere you like.
Ripping a DVD movie to media server can seem complicated, but it’s actually pretty simple. There are a lot of ways to do it and a lot of different programs out there, but our favorite method uses a program called Brorsoft DVD Ripper. It’s easy to use, it’s available for Windows, Mac, and it’ll convert your DVD file into compatible formats for any media server with the best quality.
Instructions: Ripping DVD to Media Server
STEP 1. Import DVD movies
Insert your DVD disc to the drive, then launch the DVD ripping software and click the “Load Disc” button to have the DVD content imported. You can also add VIDEO_TS folder, DVD ISO files are the source files for converting.
STEP 2. Decide output format
Click Format bar and choose MP4 from Common Video, which can be recognized by popular media server like Plex perfectly. MKV is also a good choice; as a container format it takes whatever you give it.
STEP 3. Advanced Settings
With the right settings you can retain the quality of the original DVD while also saving space. This is particularly helpful when streaming over your network, depending on your network quality. Simply click Settings bar and you can tweak the settings to your satisfaction and even save it as preset.
STEP 4. Start converting DVD to media server
Hit the “Convert” button at the bottom of the main interface to start the conversion. It will automatically convert DVD/VIDEO_TS/ISO to Media Server compatible video files.
Once the conversion is finished, click “Open” to quickly find the converted movies. Then add the DVD rips to your media server’s library. With some DLNA servers that’s as easy as placing them in a specific directory. Once loaded DVD rips into your media server, you should be ready to watch your own private movie collection whenever you want. Enjoy!
