Nokia Lumia 520 MKV format video not playing- Solution


I got the Nokia Lumia 520 and absolutely love it. Because of the limited memory available on this phone, certain applications and features will not be able to run; while, it’s still a nice and awesome phone for me. The only issue is that my Nokia Lumia 520 MKV format video not playing.

After read the detail specs of Lumia 520, I got know the Nokia Lumia 520 supported files types:

- Audio Codecs: MP3, AMR-NB, WMA 10 Pro, GSM FR, WMA 9, AAC LC, AAC+/HEAAC, eAAC+/HEAACv2

- Audio playback file formats: ASF, MP4, AAC, AMR, MP3, M4A, WMA, 3GP, 3G2

- Video playback codecs: VC-1, Windows video, H.264/AVC, H.263, MPEG-4

- Video playback file formats: MP4, ASF, WMV, AVI, 3GP, 3G2, M4V, MOV

So, it’s obvious that Nokia Lumia 520 can’t support MKV video files. Then, is there any way to play MKV on Lumia 520 this Windows 8 phone? I searched the solution, and found Brorsoft Video Converter is one of the easy workaround here. After download and installation, let’s start the MKV to Nokia Lumia 520 conversion:


1. Load MKV movies

First of all, you need to import the MKV files to the MKV to Lumia 520 converter beforehand. Simply click “Add File” icon to add the videos you want to convert

2. Select proper output video format

Click the Format bar and follow Nokia > Nokia Lumia 900 MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4), which is also the optimal format for Lumia 520.


Tip- Quality settings: You can further customize selected output format by adjusting its presets. H.264 video codec, 800*480 video size, and 1000kps video bitrate are recommended. After settings, you can click Save as icon to rename the profile as “Nokia Lumia 520 MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4)” for later use.


3. Edit video (optional)

Click option under “Edit” icon to start video editing. The supporting editing functions include the cropping frame size, trimming the length, adding watermark, and so on.


4. Start converting MKV to Lumia 520

When you are content with all the settings above, you can then hit the Convert button to start encoding 1080P/720P MKV for Lumia 520. Wait a second, the conversion will be nicely finished, and then you can easily add and play MKV files on Nokia Lumia 520 anywhere. Enjoy.

    • Try the stock video player, if it can’t handle MKV files, you’d convert MKV format to a compatible one like MP4. You can learn the details in my post.

  5. Im using Nokia lumia 520. This phone not supporting amr audio files.and in this phone ni voice recorder. Why

    • It’s the limit by the phone itself. If you want to play AMR audio on your phone, try to convert the audio format first.
